Today we kicked off our research for the Star Spangled Banner Trail with Ranger Vince from Ft. McHenry. Students got a tour of what happened right here in Patterson Park during the Battle of Baltimore in September of 1814. Some students read passages out loud depicting the scene on top of Hampstead Hill and they all identified important locations on the map. The historical marker will be unveiled this Spring. Stay tuned for more information!
We had quite an exciting trip to Ft. McHenry last Friday. Not only did we tour the Visitor's Center and the Fort itself, but we also got to take part in the flag activity. Many of our students had lots of prior knowledge of the Battle of Baltimore and the flag itself because of the Flag House tour they went on a few years ago. After lunch we observed the last remaining salt marsh in the entire harbor. We collected a water sample from there and plan on comparing the brackish water of the Patapsco River to the fresh water we collected at the Boat Lake today in Patterson Park!
