Ask your children tonight how they studied our Science vocabulary words tonight by playing the game "Quiz, Quiz, Trade". The vocabulary words are not just from our "Classifying Life" unit from this week but from last week's "Cells" unit, as well. Students also broke down pictures of organisms into plants, animals, fungi, and protists kingdoms on the white board. Read pp. 42-43 with your children tonight to learn more!

In groups today students arranged animals according to similarities they observed in each one. Later students read in their Science textbooks how animals were classified and given their scientific names. Discuss with your children how animals are given their scientific names and grouped by common characteristics from species to kingdoms on pp. 40 and 41! Carson, Imani, and Breana discuss what makes something alive. Today students worked and groups and made educated guesses as to what qualifed something as "alive". After some great discussions and reporting out to the larger group students then read in their Science books "Five Characteristics of Living Things". Quiz your children on those five characteristics tonight! The answers can be found on p. 39! Karolina and Sade observing plant cells. One Monday a month the fifth grade will be enjoying a lab acitivity in the new "Sky Lab" with Middle School Science teacher, Mr. Hendrick. Yesterday students compared plants cells of the Elodea with their animal cells from their own cheeks. Students worked in pairs and used microscopes for their research. Please ask your children to name the different componets of the microscope as well as to compare and contrast the plant and animal cells! |
