We had an exciting kickoff to our Civil War theme this week. After visiting the "Pratt St. Riots" on Monday we turned our attention to Antietam. All of our field trips are done in chronological order. Antietam took place a few months after the Pratt St Riots in September of 1862. Students conducted research on not only the battle itself but also observered Science "in action" all around us. Ecosystems, soil coservation, physical and chemical weathering and the water cycle are just some examples. Ask you children about the different rocks they saw in Antietam and Gettysburg, as well! A huge thank you to Mr. Phil McLaughlin for another fantastic tour of Antietam!

We end the school year with our Civil War Theme. (1861-1865) Each student has already been given their Civil War Project/Battlefield Tour. The two trips we have scheduled for certain is our trips to the Pratt St. Riots and Gettysburg. We will still possibly go to Antietam. Many of our students went to Antietam with me last summer for B.E.E.S. Much of their project they have they will completing in the field at the battlefields. Most of the rest can be done in the classroom. Very little of it needs to be completed at home. Each student must have their Battlefield Tour research project with them to join us on the trips! Don't lose them! Today we did a "Poster Walk" in Mr. Kaiser's class to get an idea of where we will be visiting this year and how those trips related to what we be reading in our textbooks. We discussed places we have always gone like Gettysburg, Antietam and Washington D.C. We also previewed new trips to places like Assateague Island. Ask you children what they learned today in class. It is going to be an exciting year! |
